humility

The posture of recognizing your dependence on God and placing others' needs alongside your own. Andrew Murray calls it "the root of every virtue" and the defining mark of Christ's character. Jesus washed feet (John 13#13:14-15), emptied himself of divine prerogatives (Philippians 2#2:5-8), and told his followers that the greatest among them serves (Mark 10#10:43-44).

Scripture contrasts humility with pride at every turn. God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble (Proverbs 3#3:34, James 4#4:6, 1 Peter 5#5:5). Uzziah's reign illustrates the pattern: success bred arrogance, arrogance bred presumption, and God struck him with leprosy (2 Chronicles 26#26:16-21). Daniel models the opposite: his prayer in Daniel 9 appeals to God's mercy and promises rather than his own merit.

Humility shows up in community as "unity of mind" (1 Peter 3#3:8, Philippians 2#2:2-3). Peter urges elders to shepherd without domineering (1 Peter 5#5:1-3), which echoes Ezekiel 34's indictment of leaders who fed themselves instead of the flock.
