Abstract
This paper explains key aspects of the model of church and mission that is depicted in the New Testament. It shows how the reality of the church as God’s family is the basis for the two essential leadership functions in the church that simultaneously equip disciples to grow to maturity while also advancing the gospel to unreached peoples and places. The central apostolic doctrines that are clearly depicted in the New Testament are highlighted as the foundation for unity and maturity across global Christianity. The concept of “theological formation” is introduced as a term encompassing the essential process of equipping the church to grow in maturity. Finally, the paper summarizes historical developments that led to diverse church expressions and identifies key shifts in the global spread of Christianity.
