Abstract
This document traces the development of thought around Church Planting Movements (CPM), which we call Disciple Making Movements (DMM), and the strategy models designed to catalyze them.
The principal strategy models are (1) T4T and its offshoots, such as Four Fields, and (2) the model New Generations operates by, which we also call DMM. Although some of the outline of this document is derived from the DMM model, the content comes from practitioners of both models.
This document is not exhaustive, but it is comprehensive. Although the blogosphere, podcasts, videos, and online training materials have largely been ignored (except New Generations’), a very large majority of the content on the topic published in books, journals, and magazines has been consulted. It faithfully represents how the conversation in the CPM field has unfolded since 1999, and it continues to evolve as more works are published.
There are two known gaps. The first is material from a certain Harry Brown produced after 2020. This document began to be written as background research for a book I wrote with Harry, so most of his material I stored elsewhere. I may insert it later. The second gap is criticism of CPM/DMM, which is voluminous enough to require its own document.

The bulk of the text is a summary of what is written or spoken in the sources cited with mild analysis by me when it is helpful to bring clarity or make connections with other sources. Occasional, more robust analysis by me is in brackets. I am solely responsible for any analysis; it should not be construed as a statement or position taken by New Generations.
