2026-05-03 Reading Comprehension Recall Retention
Reading ≠ Comprehension ≠ Recall ≠ Retention
These are separate stages:
- Reading: Exposure to concepts, ideas, stories.
- Comprehension: Grasping meaning.
- Recall: Retrieving information on demand.
- Retention: Maintaining knowledge over time.
Reading alone does not guarantee understanding. Comprehension does not ensure recall. Recall will not become retention if it's not committed to long term memory.
Long-term Retention
Direct recall is challenging long-term. Stronger retention emerges through connected ideas or spaced repetition. Nevertheless, if you make it through the first three steps you will still benefit from fuzzy knowledge about the domain and likely will remember where to find details, rather than verbatim quotes.
